Brace Busters / Appel Orthodontics - New Offices - Philadelphia, PA

Wick Fisher White designed a new 24,000 sf dental facility for a joint venture with Doc Bresslin’s Brace Busters and Appel Orthodontics. The new facility is located in a former vacant warehouse, directly across the street from Dr. Bresslin’s Cavity Buster Facility, on Geiger Road in North East Philadelphia. The engineering design included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems to support two practices. The mechanical systems upgrade included new rooftop units, VAV boxes and distribution ductwork to support the new clinics. The plumbing systems included a new domestic water system as well as a vacuum and equipment air systems that were piped underground to each dental chair. The electrical system modifications were designed to accommodate the new air conditioning along with the dental and imaging equipment. Wick Fisher White also designed circuiting and controls for the lighting schemes, accentuating dramatic ceiling features as well as modifications to the existing sprinkler system to support the renovations. Overall, WFW helped the client turn this vacant building into a vibrant, working facility.

Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia Data Center - Philadelphia, PA

Wick Fisher White provided a high density cooling solution for the Data Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The Data Center’s raised floor could not handle the air quantities required to cool the blade server cabinets that were being installed by the IT department. These cabinets were spread throughout the 2,500 square foot critical space. Cooling units were installed in the equipment line-ups to supplement the cooling required to satisfy the space. The cooling units are served from a heat exchanger off the main hospital chilled water system. The blade server cabinets reject approximately 12 kW of heat each. The APC chilled water in row cooling units was placed in the areas of the increased heat loads. The APC solution was recommended from a previous study completed by WFW where we indicated that the air distribution was not adequate to satisfy the increased load.

East Stroudsburg University - Phase I & II Student Housing - East Stroudsburg, PA

Wick Fisher White provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for a total of three new student housing buildings at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. Phase I consisted of two buildings, Hawthorn and Hemlock Suites, while phase II included Sycamore Suites. The mixed-use occupancy buildings contain student housing and services on the upper floors and campus police services and a recreation center in the basements of the buildings. The new buildings totaled approximately 490,000 sf and offered housing approximately 1,500 students.

Wick Fisher White’s design accommodated the varied needs of the buildings by implementation of systems and components that allow the mission critical needs of a police station and the transient needs of a recreation center to operate seamlessly with the student residence areas. Design highlights included a geothermal heat pump system served by a well field at each building, dedicated outdoor air systems with energy recovery wheels, and modifications to the campus electrical infrastructure to accommodate a substantial increase in campus loads. Construction of the first phase was completed in 2012. Construction of the second phase will be ready for students for the Fall 2017 semester, with construction costs totaling approximately $72 million.  Phase I, Hawthorn and Hemlock Suites, achieved LEED Silver Certification. The team is pursuing LEED Silver for Phase II as well.

Lights of Liberty - Philadelphia, PA

The Liberty 360 show in the PECO Theater was Philadelphia’s first high definition, 3D, 360° attraction that showed the history of the City of Philadelphia.  The theater opened in the fall of 2010 and consisted of a three ft high platform, in a 50 ft diameter space, enclosed by an 8 ft high screen, having the capacity to entertain up to 60 guests at a time.  Wick Fisher White provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and structural design services to support the design team’s vision of this high tech tourist attraction. In addition to the theater itself, the design included retail space, box office and information desks, restrooms, and an audiovisual area housing critical 24/7 computer equipment.  WFW also provided aid to the contractor in the design of several major design build elements including the design of the screen/drum enclosure and the structural support of the main AV equipment ring above the theater.

Lincoln Financial Field - Philadelphia, PA

Wick Fisher White designed a new hot water boiler plant at Lincoln Financial Field consisting of two 450-horsepower and two 250-horsepower Bryan flexible water tube hot water boilers with gas-fired burners, controls and safety devices. The Eagles requested the design of the new boiler plant after increasing electrical cost associated with their electric heat throughout the stadium. We modified the controls of the existing chilled water system to allow for the new boiler plant and create a dual-temperature water system at the stadium. As part of this project, we also developed a site plan to illustrate the points of connection for the gas service, domestic water service, sanitary and storm water connections to existing systems. Due to the complexity and fast-tracked pace of the project, this was a collaborative design-build effort between WFW and Herman Goldner Co.
